Development of speech

Children develop language at hugely differing rates. Behavioral or socio-emotional difficulties can mask an underlying language difficulty, so it is important to look carefully at a child’s language if behavioral issues are present. The quality of the language children matters, as well as the vocabulary. For instance, we use lots of different words and sentences with kids.

Expand on what children say to continue the conversation and encourage them to talk. Relate new words to people, things, and places that children already know to help them learn new meanings. Reading books, even simple ones, helps children learn different aspects of language.
